OpenAI Adds New Codex Seats to ChatGPT Enterprise as It Expands Business AI Tools

OpenAI said on April 2, 2026, that it is introducing a new Codex seat type for ChatGPT Enterprise, a change that gives customers access to Codex only and not full ChatGPT workspace access. The company said the new option uses flexible pricing and workspace credits, marking another step in its effort to broaden paid enterprise use of its AI products.

The update arrives as OpenAI continues to adjust ChatGPT’s product lineup for business customers. In recent release notes, the company has also rolled out new app integrations, connector updates and model changes across ChatGPT plans, underscoring a steady cadence of enterprise-focused changes in 2026.

What OpenAI changed

According to OpenAI’s ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu release notes, the new Codex seat is based on flexible pricing and provides access to Codex only. The company said the seat does not include ChatGPT workspace access and has no fixed cost per user per month. Using Codex requires workspace credits, while standard ChatGPT seats continue to include ChatGPT and Codex with baseline access and optional flexible pricing for usage beyond included rate limits.

OpenAI said it also updated the Codex rate card. The company said new ChatGPT Enterprise workspaces use token-based rates, while existing Enterprise and new or existing ChatGPT Edu, ChatGPT for Teachers and ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces remain on legacy message-based rates until migration.

Why the enterprise update matters

The new seat structure gives OpenAI a more granular way to sell access to its coding tools to large organizations. Rather than requiring broader ChatGPT workspace access, enterprise customers can now buy Codex access separately, a model that may appeal to teams focused on software development and internal automation.

OpenAI has been steadily expanding business-oriented features across ChatGPT. In the same release notes, the company said updated Box, Notion, Linear and Dropbox apps were rolling out to ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu on March 27, 2026, with new write capabilities where supported. On April 2, it also said ChatGPT Enterprise workspaces would gain access to ChatGPT apps and the Apps SDK, with pilot partners including Figma, Canva, Booking.com, Coursera, Expedia, Spotify and Zillow.

ChatGPT’s recent product cadence

OpenAI’s ChatGPT release notes show a rapid pace of changes in March 2026. The company said on March 23 that files uploaded or created in ChatGPT are now automatically saved to a Library for Plus, Pro and Business users, and on March 10 it introduced interactive learning modules for selected math and science topics. On March 5, OpenAI said GPT-5.4 Thinking was coming to ChatGPT, describing it as an update aimed at improving reasoning, coding and agentic workflows.

The company has also continued to retire older models from ChatGPT. OpenAI said GPT-5.1 models were no longer available in ChatGPT as of March 11, 2026, and that GPT-4o, GPT-4.1, GPT-4.1 mini and OpenAI o4-mini had been retired from ChatGPT on February 13, 2026.

The main question is how enterprise customers respond to the new Codex seat and whether OpenAI expands the model to additional plans or regions.
