OpenAI Says ChatGPT Model Retirements Are Underway as GPT-5.4 Rolls Out

OpenAI is retiring several older models from ChatGPT while rolling out GPT-5.4, a product update that changes which systems users can select inside the chatbot and underscores the company’s push to streamline its model lineup. The company said the changes took effect in stages this year, with GPT-5.4 introduced on March 5, 2026 and additional model retirements announced in the weeks that followed.

The update matters because ChatGPT has become the company’s flagship consumer product, and model availability affects everything from everyday chat use to business workflows. OpenAI has said the newer releases are intended to improve capability while reducing clutter in the model picker and shifting users toward its latest systems.

Older Models Are Being Removed From ChatGPT

According to OpenAI’s help center, GPT-4o and several other models were deprecated in ChatGPT on February 13, 2026. The company also said GPT-5.1 Instant, GPT-5.1 Thinking and GPT-5.1 Pro were retired on March 11, 2026. OpenAI said those models remain available through its API, but not for use in standard ChatGPT chats.

OpenAI added that ChatGPT Business, Enterprise and Edu customers retained access to GPT-4o within Custom GPTs until April 3, 2026. The company has framed the changes as part of a broader effort to simplify the product and move users to newer models.

GPT-5.4 Is Now the New Frontline Model

In a March 5, 2026 post, OpenAI introduced GPT-5.4 in ChatGPT, the API and Codex, describing it as its most capable and efficient frontier model for professional work. The company said GPT-5.4 Thinking can provide an upfront plan of its reasoning, allowing users to adjust course while it is working.

OpenAI also said GPT-5.4 Pro is available for users who want maximum performance on complex tasks. The company positioned the release as an upgrade for work involving spreadsheets, presentations, documents and coding.

What the Changes Mean for Users

The retirements and the new model rollout together mark a significant reset for ChatGPT’s user experience. For many users, the practical effect will be fewer legacy options in the interface and a stronger push toward the newest default models.

For businesses and developers, the distinction between ChatGPT and the API remains important. OpenAI said the retired models continue to be supported in the API, which means organizations can still access them there even as they disappear from ChatGPT itself.
