OpenAI retires GPT-5.1 models from ChatGPT as March rollout continues

OpenAI has retired its GPT-5.1 model family from ChatGPT, removing GPT-5.1 Instant, GPT-5.1 Thinking and GPT-5.1 Pro from the product, according to the company’s release notes updated on March 11, 2026. The change matters because it affects which models users can access inside ChatGPT and how existing conversations are handled as OpenAI continues reshaping the service’s model lineup.

The update appears in OpenAI’s ChatGPT release notes and help center, which say existing conversations that used GPT-5.1 will automatically continue on newer models. OpenAI has also been making broader changes to ChatGPT’s available model options in recent months, including earlier retirements and the introduction of newer GPT-5.4 variants.

What changed

According to OpenAI, GPT-5.1 models are no longer available in ChatGPT as of March 11, 2026. The company said the retirement applies to GPT-5.1 Instant, GPT-5.1 Thinking and GPT-5.1 Pro. In the release notes, OpenAI said chats that previously used GPT-5.1 will move to the corresponding current models.

The help center says those conversations will continue on GPT-5.3 Instant, GPT-5.4 Thinking or GPT-5.4 Pro, depending on the original mode used. OpenAI also said GPT-5.1 remains available through the API, even though it has been removed from ChatGPT.

Why the retirement matters

Model changes inside ChatGPT can affect how users experience the product, especially for paid customers who rely on specific reasoning or response styles. OpenAI has been shifting its consumer and enterprise offerings toward newer model families, while also keeping some older versions available for a limited time in the API or legacy settings.

In March, OpenAI also introduced GPT-5.4 in ChatGPT, the API and Codex, describing it as a frontier model designed for professional work. The company said GPT-5.4 Thinking replaced GPT-5.2 Thinking for ChatGPT Plus, Team and Pro users, while Enterprise and Edu customers could enable early access through admin settings.

OpenAI’s broader ChatGPT changes

The GPT-5.1 retirement follows a series of product adjustments in ChatGPT this year. OpenAI previously said it retired GPT-4o, GPT-4.1, GPT-4.1 mini and OpenAI o4-mini from ChatGPT, while leaving some of those models available in the API. The company has also been adding new features, including interactive learning tools for math and science topics.

OpenAI’s release notes and help pages show a product that is still moving quickly, with model availability changing as newer versions are introduced and older ones are phased out. For users, that means the model picker in ChatGPT can change materially from one month to the next.

The next question is how long OpenAI keeps the newer GPT-5.4 family in its current form before another model update or retirement cycle begins.
