OpenAI expands ChatGPT shopping features with richer product discovery and side-by-side comparisons
OpenAI has expanded ChatGPT’s shopping experience with more visual product results, image-based discovery and side-by-side comparisons, a March 24 update that moves the chatbot further into product research and purchase planning. The changes are rolling out to all users and are designed to make ChatGPT more useful when people are comparing items rather than just asking for recommendations.
ChatGPT shopping now surfaces richer product details
The update gives product results more prominent images and more useful on-page context, including price, reviews and feature comparisons. Users can browse products directly in chat, refine results through follow-up prompts and compare items without jumping between multiple tabs.
OpenAI also said the product data behind those results has been improved for coverage, freshness and speed. That matters for shopping queries, where stale pricing or incomplete listings can quickly make an answer less useful than a traditional search result.
Image upload becomes part of the shopping workflow
A second change lets users upload images to find similar products, turning ChatGPT into a more visual discovery tool. That moves the experience closer to how shoppers actually browse across categories such as apparel, home goods and electronics, where a photo can be a stronger starting point than a text query.
The company said the shopping results are powered through the Agentic Commerce Protocol, the framework it is using to connect product discovery in ChatGPT with merchant and provider data. In practical terms, that makes the chatbot less of a general conversation layer and more of a commerce interface built around structured product information.
Why the March 24 rollout matters
The update is one of the clearest signs that OpenAI wants ChatGPT to behave less like a static answer engine and more like a shopping assistant that can hold context across a buying process. Richer comparisons and fresher product data make the system more competitive with traditional search and retail sites, especially for users trying to narrow choices quickly.
For merchants and product providers, the rollout raises the stakes on data quality inside AI-driven shopping surfaces. If ChatGPT keeps expanding this workflow, the accuracy and freshness of product feeds will become a more direct commercial concern, not just a technical one.
